Bowl for St. Andrew's Residence!

The Shepherds of Good Hope had a dream to supply long-term, affordable, safe, and secure housing for people striving to live independently.  With the financial support of the Ministry of Health we were able to make that dream a reality.

St. Andrew Residence, a 37 unit apartment building, is owned and operated by the Shepherds of Good Hope.  It is home to 35 individuals who live with a variety of mental illnesses.  One unit in the building was converted into a staff office and another unit serves as a resource room for the tenants.  The resource room is a gathering place for recreational activities, educational workshops, and is also a source for information relating to available resources in the community.  In the resource room there is a full kitchen, two computers with internet access, and a television with cable which tenants have access to from 9 in the morning until 11 at night.

We are proud of the sense of community the tenants have created in the residence.  The tenants have organized garage sales and BBQ’s, they plant and maintain a vegetable garden, and they manage their own tenant’s association meetings.

It is because of their effort and desire to live in a strong community that we are hosting this bowl-a-thon fundraiser.  The funds raised will be used to support tenant activities and initiatives like an over night camping trip, visits to museums, trips to hockey games, as well as to strengthen skills based groups such as the community cooking group.

The St. Andrew’s Residence Bowl-A-Thon will be hosted on September 9th, 2012, 1:00 p.m., at McArthur Bowling Lanes.  You can obtain a sponsor sheet for the bowl-a-thon by contacting Susan Alcott, the Activities Coordinator, at 613-288-0138 or via email at suea@shepherdsofgoodhope.com.  To ensure success from this bowl-a-thon we are asking that individuals raise a minimum of $25.00 each; this minimum covers the cost of shoe rental and two games.

When tenants move into St. Andrew’s Residence they are given an opportunity to grow and live an independent and healthy life.  Please help us enhance their opportunities for healthy living by bowling for St. Andrew’s Residence.

Potato Harvest for Shepherds of Good Hope

Shepherds of Good Hope is receiving the generosity from the community one more time.  An Ottawa entrepreneur, Mike Quinn has donated one of his garden plots on the Earl Armstrong Road for a charity harvest after his friend Shawn Thompson convinced him it would be a good idea.  Shawn took it upon himself to plant the seed potatoes and suggested that the recipients of the harvest should be Shepherds of Good Hope.

Today four of Shepherds of Good Hope clients, as well as two staff members joined Shawn and Mike in a potato harvest of 400 linear feet of plants.  A BBQ and refreshments followed and all potatoes were transported back to Shepherds of Good Hope Soup Kitchen.

“I plan to grow this idea literally and perhaps add another crop or two next year with Shepherds of Good Hope input and support,” said Shawn Thompson.

“Shepherds of Good Hope feed, clothe and house the poor and homeless but could not continue to do so without the generosity and dedication of the community at large. For this we are very grateful,” said Paul Soucie, Executive Director of Shepherds of Good Hope.
