Beth Shalom

On Sunday a large and enthusiastic group of volunteers from Congregation Beth Shalom came to help out in the soup kitchen. We were extremely grateful for all their help as the kitchen was particularly busy with hungry clients trying to warm up from the cold. From the time the doors opened till everyone was served the group hustled around with constant smiles. A big thank you to everyone in the group.

Target Canada

Over the last year Target Canada has been an incredible community partner making countless donations of food, clothing and other much needed goods to various Shepherds of Good Hope facilities. So we were very excited when they asked us if a team could come volunteer in the soup kitchen and meet some of the clients that they are helping to support. The team was working so hard at peeling potatoes and making sandwiches we had a tough time pulling them away in order to take a photo!

A big thank you to everyone at Target Canada for making community a priority.

If you ever want to volunteer or learn more about the programs at Shepherds of Good Hope please contact Judy.

Pizza Day!

Today was a special treat in the Soup Kitchen!  Thanks to Little Caesar's we were able to provide pizza to everyone that comes for community lunch, that is usually around 400 people per day!

A few of our regular Friday volunteers getting ready to serve lunch!

Coleslaw also made an appearance

As well as some macaroni salad!

Pastries for dessert

Thanks so much to Little Caesar's, all of our donors and volunteers for being able to feed Ottawa's hungry every single day!

Remembering Nancy Scatcherd

Today's post is a guest post by Shirley Soehn, Board Treasurer, Shepherds of Good Hope Foundation. Shirley also volunteers weekly in the soup kitchen.

Nancy Scatcherd volunteering in the kitchen

Nancy Scatcherd was a volunteer at Shepherds of Good Hope for over 20 years. She came to Shepherds twice a week to work in the kitchen. Her main task was to make salads for serving approximately 400 clients lunch. She did this with a smile and with as much care as possible.

Nancy was similar to many of the volunteers at Shepherds. She was someone who wanted to do something useful for others. She cared deeply for the people who were homeless that needed our help and she enjoyed the camaraderie she had with the other volunteers at Shepherds.

One of Nancy’s distinguishing features was the black rim hat she wore when she volunteered. It gave people the impression that she was someone who was pleasant and approachable, and that she was. She would always make a point of greeting everyone in the kitchen with a big hello and a smile. Nancy was often in charge of assigning tasks for serving during the lunch hour and in doing so she would make sure individuals were assigned tasks on the basis of their own needs and wants. She would also make a point of thanking all the volunteers for their help once the lunch hour was complete.

Nancy was a joy to work with and she will truly be missed by all her friends at Shepherds. May she rest in peace.

Thank You to Our Wonderful Volunteers!

National Volunteer week is April 6-12, 2014.  Shepherds of Good Hope would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our dedicated and hardworking volunteers who have given so much of themselves to help the less fortunate in our community.  Our volunteers are the backbone of our organization and without them we could not provide for the over 1600 men and women who come through our doors everyday.

Spaghetti for Lunch!

Each and everyday our volunteers work hard in the kitchen to serve 400-500 lunches to the hungry people that walk in our doors.  Today's lunch was delicious spaghetti!

Bobby's Table

Today I went to visit Bobby's Table on Montreal Road to present them with a certificate for their donations to our soup kitchen.  On a frequent basis, we always receive donations of delicious sandwiches and salads from Bobby's Table and it's such a wonderful treat for our clients.

A huge thank you to Bobby and Bill at Bobby's Table.  I can't wait to stop by for lunch!

Presenting a certificate to Bobby (L) and Bill (R).
